I met up with some friends at a coffee shop for an open mic to see another friend perform. While I drank coffee and caught up with my friends, a guy (Lucas) came on stage to perform some stand up. Lucas started off by pointing me out and announcing that I was pretty and then asking for my name. I knew I would be a part of some joke, so I went along with it. The jokes started off about how pretty I would be to murder. Incredibly morbid stuff. I laughed and hoped that he’d stop telling weird jokes at my expense and move on. He didn’t. There were jokes about how great it would be to rape me. He said he’d like me to pee on his face. Then another joke about how pretty I am and asking when I last had my period. I rolled my eyes. My face had gone from slightly uncomfortable to completely mortified. He went on with his routine. I tried to pay attention and hope that the jokes would get better. They only consisted of gay-bashing jokes which left my two good gay friends really uncomfortable. Once I started texting on my phone, he decided to ask me if I thought his jokes were funny so far. I laughed obnoxiously and snorted, “No. You’re fucking terrible and not funny at all.” His face went white and it was his turn to look offended. So his response? “Yeah, but it’s cool because you’ll still fuck me after the show.” Disgusting.
My friends felt bad for me. The audience was clearly uncomfortable. The guy who runs open mic made a public apology to me later in the night. A couple other performers came up and also apologized. Which is nice but it only mattered if Lucas personally made the apology to me. Someone told me that’s a part of all his routines. Pathetic.
Oh and you know what else? If the guy wasn’t on stage and said this to me at the counter, someone would have decked him. Maybe I just don’t get how hilarious harassment can be.
I decided to write back because “liking” your post seemed wrong.
You appear to have fallen headlong into speech being protected as art. Which it clearly wasn’t in this case. That sucks. The review board for protected speech needs to hire a few million more people.
