AT&T’s ‘Long Distance!’ (1941)

The Prelinger Archives is a vast and wonderful collection of “ephemeral” films: documentaries, educational films, advertisements, and industrial footage, all in the public domain. Rick Prelinger, founder of the Archives, shares one of his favorites, a promotional film for AT&T, made in 1941. Although the first lasting transatlantic cable was laid in 1866, it’s not hard to feel a thrill as the film’s narrator compares the expansion of AT&T’s network to the explorers who made their way to the American west.

Rick Prelinger: Long Distance! is a hymn to the combined efforts of communication engineers and the “alert young women” who provide the “watchful feminine  presence at the switchboard.”

This video is both fascinating and a riot. Read more at The Atlantic.

Apple was nice enough to change the cache limit for the iDisk application for the iPhone. The previous limit was 200MB which wasn’t useful for anything other than a TV show or short film. But the new limit of 500MB is actually useful if you’d like to take a movie with you on the go but don’t have the space on your phone.

With a little trial and error, I got a full length movie down to roughly 500MB with good audio and a decent image quality at iPhone resolution. It streamed over 3G without an issue as well. It took roughly 25 seconds to start playing and I played it for a good 15 minutes with no pausing to buffer.

I’d like to try sharing this with someone, so if you have an iPhone and would like to give it a shot, let me know.

Article is here.

When I see something like this I always imagine it happening 1000+ years ago, having some power hungry individual stand up and say “I made that happen!” and BAM! another cult with more members than it should have is born.

It’s a very impressive accident, if that is what it really is.

Murphy just wont let go, which Monica finds quite funny. A little more speed and I bet I could get him off the ground.

If I lived close to a place like this I’d probably spend a lot of time there.
